John P. Snyder developed the Oblated Equal Area projection, in which lines of constant distortion follow approximately oval or rectangular paths rather than circles or straight lines of other Equal Area projections. The Oblated Equal Area projection has less overall distortion for oblong or rectangular regions.

This projection contains these unique parameters:

Parameter M    Oblated equal area oval shape for parameter M. Determines horizontal flatness of the oblong region.

Parameter N    Oblated equal area oval shape for parameter N. Determines vertical flatness of the oblong region.

Longitude of center of projection    Longitude of center of projection

Latitude of center of projection    Latitude of center of projection

Rotation angle    Oblated equal area oval rotation angle, expressed in degrees.
